Students from the 2016 Commonwealth & International Student Christmas event at Cumberland Lodge

The annual Commonwealth and International Student Christmas conference in December is our longest-standing tradition.

The first gathering of international students at Cumberland Lodge was in 1947, just a few weeks after King George VI granted us the use of the Lodge for our educational work.

Every year we extend a warm welcome to students from all over the world who are currently studying in Britain, to join us for the chance to experience a traditional British Christmas, to engage in a programme of thought-provoking and inspiring seminars and workshops, and to meet others who are studying away from home.

This short video from our 69th annual Commonwealth and International Student Christmas conference in December 2016 was kindly produced for Cumberland Lodge by Laura Garcia from the Centre for Journalism at the University of Kent.

A traditional Christmas

The conference takes place at Cumberland Lodge, in the heart of Windsor Great Park. As part of the programme, guests have the chance to experience:

  • A Christmas carol service in the Royal Chapel

  • A winter trail through Windsor Great Park

  • A traditional Christmas dinner, with a visit from Father Christmas

  • Evening games and entertainment.

Seminars and workshops

Participants also take part in seminars and workshops throughout the weekend, with visiting speakers and organisations.

In 2016 we were joined by Streetwise Opera, a charity that works with people who have experienced homelessness and uses music to help them make positive changes in their lives, and by Pan Intercultural Arts, an arts company using intercultural performance work to encourage self-expression and promote a deeper understanding of cultural identities in London communities.

An album of photos from our 2016 conference is available on our Facebook page.
