A student study retreat group on the lawn at Cumberland Lodge

Every year, around 4,000 students come to Cumberland Lodge for residential study retreats, from higher education institutions across the UK, including universities, the Inns of Court and NHS vocational training schemes.

We subsidise these retreats and other events from our charitable resources, to encourage the widest possible student participation. As well as being intellectually stimulating, they allow students to interact with each other in ways not possible in their institutions.

Some university departments have been visiting for decades and their gatherings has become a much valued tradition.

Here is a short video from the Philosphy Department at the University of Herfordshire about their study retreats at Cumberland Lodge.

St Catharine's Sessions

Cumberland Lodge offers visiting student groups the option of a 'St Catharine's Session' during their stay, led by a member of our academic staff. The sessions are designed to encourage stduents to reflect critically on ethical, moral and social issues outside of their own fields of study.

Find out more about the sessions here.
