Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find Travel Directions to Cumberland Lodge?
Under Contact Us on this website.

Who funds Cumberland Lodge?

We are a registered charity, incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. Cumberland Lodge (formerly the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Foundation of St Catharine's) has no endowment and survives principally through income from its activities. The Charity also raises funds from appropriate sponsors, donors, companies and individuals. We receive no Government grants.

Who do I contact if I want to book Cumberland Lodge as a venue for a conference I am responsible for organising?

Please contact the Conference Bookings Manager, Matthew Hancock (T: 01784 497780 as he deals with all bookings, including questions about food and accommodation requirements and conference facilities.

How do I offer to help with Cumberland Lodge's own conferences?

If you think you would like to be included in one of our Cumberland Lodge conferences, which are organised by our own staff rather than by an external organisation, then please contact Janis Reeves (T: 01784 497794) in the first instance. Please say whether you wish to be considered as a speaker, an advisor or a participant. Janis will pass on your information to one of the members of the Conference Programme department, or Dr Alastair Niven (Principal).

What conference equipment is available for use?

The Lodge and the Mews buildings all have wireless access to broadband internet free of charge. The three largest meeting rooms, Flitcroft, Sandby and the Library have ceiling-mounted data projectors and there are portable projectors for use elsewhere. Laptops can be provided, or you can use your own. However, all technical facilities need to be pre-booked and you should check whether we can handle the data format and storage devices you use for presentations.

In addition to standard facilities such as flipcharts, overhead projectors and TV monitors, we have sound recording equipment, PA amplifiers and speakers, fixed and portable hearing loops, and in Flitcroft, simple stage lighting. The Bookings Manager (T: 01784 497780) will be pleased to advise you. For complex conference requirements, we strongly recommend groups to book a technician, who can be provided at reasonable daily rates.

Who runs Cumberland Lodge?

Cumberland Lodge, a charitable company limited by guarantee, has a Board of Directors/Trustees, chaired by Sir Stephen Wall. The building is a Crown property, which the charity is permitted to use by Royal Warrant.

Can I stay at Cumberland Lodge as an individual guest?

We are not a hotel. Visitors almost always come to the Lodge as members of a group.

How formal is the Lodge?

We try to run the place as much like the family home that it was for much of its history. Dress tends to be casual in the daytime, but many groups opt for a slightly more formal appearance in the evenings. Some visitors may wish to wear national dress or formal attire on special occasions. Visitors who plan to attend the Royal Chapel on Sundays are asked to dress appropriately.

Do you do weddings?Wedding Carriage

Very rarely, because there are so few gaps in the conference calendar.

Do you offer bursaries to visiting students?

Yes, though usually recipients are nominated by visiting institutions and we normally can only offer a few to each group.
