Conference Overview
Through a programme of conferences, discussions and external events, Cumberland Lodge initiates fresh debate on issues of national and international significance. We are independent and so able to promote frank exchanges of views and cross-sector co-operation on matters affecting the development of society. Christian by foundation, we encourage the expression of all reasonable views, whether they be religious, moral or social.
We initiate about nine conferences a year at the Lodge, often working in tandem with another organisation such as the Commonwealth Secretariat, 21st Century Trust or the St Paul's Institute. We aim particularly to explore connections in the following areas: International affairs, especially concerning the Commonwealth or Europe; Religion and Ethics; Education; Culture and Society; Law and Order; the Media and Society.
By reflecting on particular issues in terms of their wider ramifications, our conferences are informative and inspiring, giving participants the opportunity to gain fresh insights and to make new contacts. At least one conference a year is dedicated to postgraduate students, bringing them together from many institutions and disciplines. Other conferences are for people in any walk of life with a commitment to the topic.
The Lodge works with outside organisations such as the Barbican Centre and the Cheltenham Literature Festival to arrange panel conversations and other kinds of discussion. We also have occasional open discussions at the Lodge on current affairs. Among the projects it has recently administered is the internationally known Commonwealth Writers' Prize .

Academic Consultative CommitteeThe Cumberland Lodge Academic Consultative Committee meets three times a year to offer advice on the direction, content and speakers of the Lodge’s own conferences. The members, who have diverse strengths and interests, are:
