One year after 2010 general election – the third sector became the lynch-pin of the government’s “Big Society” policy. This event took stock of the impact of policy context changes, service delivery reforms, and the emerging priorities of the big and civil society, giving and volunteering, social enterprise and demonstrating value. It offered a space to reflect on the implications of these changes for the sector and speculate about the possibilities they offer for the future
The Third Sector Research Centre had reached the mid-point in its initial research programme which includes:
•Quantitative analysis of changing shape and structure of the sector
•Qualitative evidence of dynamics within third sector organisations
•Clearer understanding of developing policy environment (including continuing impact of Devolution with the UK)
•Emerging evidence of measurement of the value and impact of the sector
Key issues likely to be emerging in policy and practice:
•Role of third sector representation in national policy development and delivery
•Increasing role of third sector organisations in delivery of public services
•Importance of third sector organisations in promoting civic engagement and democratic renewal
•Impact of recent recession on third sector funding and sustainability
•Diversity within the sector and potential for bifurcation and fragmentation
This conference – held under the Chatham House rule – was a unique opportunity to hear the latest findings from TSRC , and to talk frankly about the how to get the best from the sector in difficult times.
