Ten PhD students, from universities across the UK and a wide range of academic disciplines, have been selected to take up Cumberland Lodge Fellowships in September 2020.

We received 190 applications for this year’s fellowships and this year all our interviews were virtual. The successful applicants were chosen on the basis of their personal commitment to promoting social progress and collaborating across academic disciplines, as well as for their academic excellence.

The Cumberland Lodge Fellowship programme was launched in 2014. It gives doctoral students the opportunity to be closely involved with our work for two years, and develop the skills and networks to become future leaders and change-makers after their PhDs.

The fellowship programme helps them to deepen their understanding of pressing societal issues, and develop valuable skills in public engagement, networking, communication and interdisciplinary working.

Every year, one of the ten Fellows is nominated by Cara, the Council for At-Risk Academics, which supports academics would are at risk of persecution, conflict or violence in their home countries to study or work in the UK.

Meet our new Fellows

We are pleased to announce that the Fellows joining us this autumn are:

Our new Fellows' areas of research span: the development of legal theory; the ethics of digital technology; peacebuilding in Northern Ireland; female leadership in higher education; healthy lifestyles and nutrition; 20th-century literary cultures in Mumbai, India; the wellbeing of refugees and asylum-seekers in London; pioneering cancer research; ethnic and religious discrimination; and policy frameworks around violence against women.

Our 2020-22 cohort will be invited to take part in an initial weekend retreat, at the beginning of the new academic year (either virtually or at Cumberland Lodge, in line with Government advice).

Our current cohort of Fellows will complete the programme this August, and they will remain an integral part of our global Cumberland Lodge community, in future.

Future applications

Applications for Fellows to join us in September 2021 will open in early spring 2021.

Details will be posted on our website, as well as via social media (#clScholarships), and through doctoral schools at universities across the UK.
