On Thursday 8 December the Friends of Cumberland Lodge were invited to Cumberland Lodge for afternoon tea with our Cumberland Lodge Scholars, to find out more about what the scholars do and about their academic areas of interest.
Our guests enjoyed tea and cakes in the Drawing Room and mingled with our scholars informally. They also the chance to watch a video featuring scholars past and present, discussing their experiences of being involved with the work of the Lodge.
The event was a chance for us to wish farewell to our outgoing scholars from 2014 to 2016 and to introduce our newest scholars for 2015 to 2017 and some of our newest members of staff to the Friends members.
Our two-year Cumberland Lodge Scholarships are open to doctoral students from any university in the UK who demonstrate both academic excellence and a commitment to working for the betterment of society and we recruit up to six new scholars each year, to start in September. They offer the chance for students to gain experience of working collaboratively, engaging in cross-disciplinary discussions, events facilitation and public engagement, networking and writing for different audiences. You can find out more about the scholarships here.
Our new scholars include: Iman Azzi (Institute of Education, University College London), Harriet Hoffler (University of Bristol), Rebecca Love (Centre for Diet and Activity Research, University of Cambridge), Nick Thompson (Univeristy of Reading), Liisa Tuhkanen (School of Slavonic and East European Studies, UCL) and Michael Veale (Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy, University College London, and the Department of Computer Science, University College London).
You can find out more about their work and research interests here.
One of our guests commented afterwards,"Being able to speak to the scholars was so interesting and worthwhile. Thank you very much for including us in a most enjoyable afternoon," and another said, “It was really interesting to meet the scholars and hear some of their stories. Good luck to them all!”
We have shared some photos from the event below. Find out more about the Friends of Cumberland Lodge here.
