Guests from Pause for Thought (BBC Radio 2) and Thought for the Day (BBC Radio 4) will be joining us at Cumberland Lodge for a free evening seminar and question and answer session on Tuesday 29 November.
Canon Angela Tilby, a Thought for the Day regular, and Michael Wakelin, executive producer of Pause for Thought, will join Edmund Newell, our Principal and himself a regular contributor to Pause for Thought, to discuss the business of navigating 'The God Slot' on national radio.
They will be talking about how they seek to bring a faith dimension to current affairs in a way that resonates with an audience of all faiths and none.
The speakers will also be sharing some insights into what goes on in the recording studio, and providing a practical demonstration with the help of comedy writer and BBC Top Gear and TFI Friday scriptwriter, Paul Kerensa.
Paul is experienced at writing for Pause for Thought, which airs during the daily Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2.
The evening will take the format of an informal conversation led by the Principal of Cumberland Lodge, Edmund Newell, who is himself a Pause for Thought contributor, followed by the chance to mingle over drinks and refreshments.
'Challenging but rewarding'
Speaking about his own experiences of Pause for Thought, Ed Newell said: "I love doing Pause for Thought – from the moment I gulp when the producer gives me an impossible subject to speak about, to the comments I receive from listeners when the broadcast has gone out. It’s one of the most challenging but rewarding things I do.
“I’m looking forward to hearing Angela and Michael’s take on ‘The God Slot’ and how they make their content relevant and engaging to the listeners, and hoping to get some useful tips from Paul about how he writes for broadcast.”
Our Cumberland Conversations event will start at 6pm in Flitcroft, our main conference room, and the seminar will be followed by drinks and refreshments and a chance to mingle with other guests. Everyone is welcome.
Admission is free of charge and all are welcome to attend, but prior booking is essential as numbers are limited.
