Tradition: Harmony & Colour, an exciting new exhibition by Mahrukh Bashir and Lucy Temple, will be installed at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park, on Monday 12 December.
The collection features artwork inspired by the traditional techniques and patterns of Islamic art and both artists are alumni of The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London.
The exhibition will be open to the public with free admission on Saturdays from 10.00am till 12.30pm, on: 17 December, 7 January, 4 February and 25 February.
'Dialogue and harmony'
Mahrukh Bashir grew up in Kenya and lived in Dubai before settling in London. She is fascinated by different cultures and traditions and her striking paintings serve as interpretative narratives, derived from her understanding of sacred texts, wisdom and poetry. She has studied under master artisans from across the world, in manuscript illumination, calligraphy and miniature painting.
Inspired by the beauty, colour and patterns of nature, Mahrukh specialises in traditional Islamic arts and crafts.
She said: “As a recent graduate of the Prince's School of Traditional Arts I’m excited and honoured to be able to exhibit my work in such a wonderful and prestigious location. The pieces in my exhibition are all inspired by the Gardens of Paradise. I hope that my work will help to inspire peaceful dialogue and harmony.”
Lucy grew up in southern Spain, the daughter of renowned icon dealer Sir Richard Temple. Her mother was an interior designer and mural painter. She produces highly detailed designs in jewel-like colours, drawing on her training in Islamic design and traditional skills such as Indian miniature painting, calligraphy, ceramic tiling, tapestry work and icon painting.
Lucy said: “I’m really looking forward to exhibiting, especially alongside Mahrukh. It’s interesting, our mixed background and cultures, coming together in such a beautiful setting.”
Taking traditional Islamic patterns as her starting point, Lucy works with geometric patterns where colour and shape are the key elements. She is currently working towards an exhibition at London Olympia in June 2017.
