Avani is a PhD candidate and Gates Scholar at the University of Cambridge. Prior to beginning her doctorate in the Faculty of English, she received a Bachelor’s degree in English from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi, and a Master’s in World Literatures in English, from the University of Oxford.
Avani's research examines 20th-century print cultures in Bombay, with an emphasis on little magazines and questions of place: geographic, literary and linguistic. Her approach combines literary study with digital humanities tools, to examine counter-cultural expression from the 1960s onward.
More broadly, Avani's work concerns marginalised voices and the forms that enable their articulation. Her professional background includes teaching at undergraduate level and working in the public arts space. Alongside her academic commitments, she runs the Pind Collective, an online platform for young artists from India and Pakistan.
