Melani Schroeter is Associate Professor in German Linguistics at the University of Reading. She specialises in analyses of public and political discourse and has investigated public debates about migration and immigrants, and public debates about language use, including silence and concealment in political discourse. The latter led her to investigate debates about political correctness in Germany and the UK.
She aims to show how discourses about language use can help us explore language ideologies, i.e. people’s ideas about what language does and how it should (not) be used in various domains. She is also interested in contextualising these ideas by asking whether and which agendas may be perpetuated when language is put out for debate.
