Matt is undertaking his PhD in the Nuffield Department of Medicine and at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Oxford. His PhD is in the field of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) immunology. His research explores interactions between HIV-1 and the immune system, aiming to elucidate ways in which the virus either evades or exploits some immune responses. This work could inform novel preventive or therapeutic strategies.

Matt is a qualified vet, having graduated with a BVSc (Veterinary Science) from the University of Bristol in 2015. He is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and maintains work in clinical practice part-time alongside his PhD. He also has a BSc in Virology & Immunology.

Outside of the lab Matt is an ambassador for the STEM Learning Ambassador Programme and a contributor to Polygeia, a student-ran think tank in global health policy. He is also a volunteer workshop facilitator for the Oxford-based Good Lad Initiative, a social intervention strategy which actively engages young men in group discussions to tackle gender inequality and misogyny in universities and wider society through positive change.
