A student study retreat group on the lawn at Cumberland Lodge

Every year, well over 3,000 students come to Cumberland Lodge for residential study retreats, from higher education institutions across the UK, including universities, the Inns of Court and NHS vocational training schemes.

We subsidise these retreats and other events from our charitable resources, to encourage the widest possible student participation. As well as being intellectually stimulating, they allow students to interact with each other in ways not possible in their institutions.

Bursaries are available to help students with limited financial means to attend with their peers.

Many university departments have been visiting for decades and their gatherings have become a much valued tradition.

St Catharine's Sessions

We strongly encourage all visiting student groups to incorporate an hour-long St Catharine's Session into their programme. This can be facilitated by a member of our academic staff, or run independently.

These group discussion sessions are designed to help students reflect critically on ethical, moral and social issues outside of their own fields of study. Find out more here.
