This short documentary video tells the fascinating story behind Darkness over Germany and the lady who wrote it, and the establishment of the educational foundation at Cumberland Lodge 70 years ago, to help ensure that the events of the 1930s in Germany are never repeated.

The video features archive footage of the World Wars, recent footage from Cumberland Lodge events and current affairs, readings by the actress Tamsin Greig, excerpts from presentations by Dr Rowan Williams and Baroness Butler-Sloss.

There are also interviews with:

  • Professor Kurt Barling - Professor of Journalism at Middlesex University London and author of the foreword to Darkness over Germany: A Warning from History (2017)

  • Jane Furniss - Trustee of Cumberland Lodge, Deputy Chair of Crisis, non-executive Director of the National Crime Agency, and Senior Independent Director of the Solicitors Regulation Authority

  • Katherine O'Lone - Amy Buller PhD Scholar at Cumberland Lodge, and PhD student at Royal Holloway London

  • Canon Vincent Strudwick - Priest, theologian and educationalist, and an early visitor to Cumberland Lodge in the 1950s.

It was produced by our freelance Research Associate, Laura Garcia, who is also a Lecturer in the Centre for Journalism at the University of Kent.
