Seminar briefing for an over-dinner seminar held at Cumberland Lodge on 4 May 2016, with guest speaker, David Anderson QC
David Anderson QC, the independent reviewer of the UK’s anti-terrorism legislation, spoke at a dinner and seminar for counter-extremism stakeholders, held at Cumberland Lodge on the evening of 4 May 2016.
David introduced some of the current issues relating to the UK government's counter-extremism strategy, Prevent, and explained why he thinks it needs an independent review.
The strategy has come under heavy criticism: for example, it has been said that it inhibits discussion in schools about issues of terrorism and extremism, and that it stifles freedom of speech on university campuses. Some members of the Muslim community have said they feel as though they are under surveillance and even that their children are at risk of being taken into care.
