Cumberland Lodge 70th anniversary logo - celebrating 70 years from 1947 to 2017

Cumberland Lodge has been celebrating 70 years as an educational foundation in 2017.

In 1947, in the aftermath of World War II, King George VI granted the use of Cumberland Lodge to a new kind of educational institution where young people could meet to explore the moral and spiritual issues of the day. The foundation was the vision of Ernestine Amy Buller, who had published Darkness over Germany in 1943, about her experiences of talking to people about the rise of Nazism in pre-war Germany.

The St Catharine's Foundation, as it was known in its early days, formed the basis for the present day Cumberland Lodge with HM The Queen as its patron, following in the footsteps of her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who was patron from 1947 until 2002.

Today, we continue to challenge silo thinking and to provide an inclusive environment for ‘unsafe’ discussions to take place, to foster learning and critical thinking. For our 70th year we have reinvigorated our strategic mission to tackle the root causes and effects of social divisions, and rearticulated Amy Buller’s original vision for current times, using Darkness over Germany as the basis for addressing some of the most pressing issues we face today.
