We are pleased to announce that the diplomat Alan Gemmell OBE was appointed to our Board of Trustees this month.
Alan brings membership of our Board to ten, after two of our long-serving trustees stepped down at the end of two five-year terms in office, in the summer.
Alan is Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Enterprise Investment Council (CWEIC), which works with governments and businesses around the world to promote trade, investment and the role of the private sector within Commonwealth member countries. Previously, he was Director of the British Council in India. He has worked in Israel, Brazil, London and Mexico.
Alan is also one of the Top 30 public sector leaders to feature in the Yahooo Finance '2019 OUTstanding LGBT+ Role Models List'. He was included in the 2017 Financial Times 'Top 20 Public Sector LGBT Executives' in 2017, and in GQ magazine's 2016 'List of the 100 Most Connected Men in the UK'.
'Creativity, vision and business acumen'
Our Chief Executive, Canon Dr Edmund Newell, said, 'Alan brings with him an exciting mix of creativity, vision and business acumen. He has extensive networks in the UK and beyond, and has an outstanding record of service with the British Council and as a civil servant.
'I very much look forward to working with him. Alan also has a keen interest in the arts, which we have always drawn upon as part of our work in highlighting and tackling pressing social issues.'
'Make a difference'
Alan said, 'It’s a great privilege to join the Board of Cumberland Lodge and to be part of the wider team led by Edmund Newell. I’m excited to play a small part in helping to develop and promote the mission of Cumberland Lodge to build networks with the power to make a difference and to bring people with different points of view together.'
Our Board is responsible for overseeing our work and ensuring that the charity is well run. It is chaired by The Rt Hon the Baroness Prashar of Runnymede.
