On Monday 7 January 2019, Cumberland Lodge and the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) brought together representatives from a range of religious groups and community organisations for a symposium on Democracy in Crisis? Moral & Spiritual Resistance.

The event explored potential faith group responses to the challenges faced by communities today, due to the rise of populism, extremism, antisemitism and islamophobia in the UK and beyond.

Delegates explored issues such as:

  • Social media and online extremism

  • Inequality and living standards

  • Identity and integration

  • Faith and the public sphere.

The Symposium Papers are available to download from this webpage, including the keynote addresses, panellist addresses, and a summary of the group discussions from this one-day symposium at Cumberland Lodge.

Further resources from the event, including a recording of Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg's introductory address, delegate blogs, and a graphic recording of the key themes of discussion, can be found on our Read, Watch, Listen webpages.
