In February 2018, 40 UK-based international students from 25 countries convened at Cumberland Lodge, together with established global advocates, charity leaders, academics and policy influencers, to discuss Freedom & Sexuality: LGBTQI+ Rights in the Commonwealth.
This two-day residential conference was convened in partnership with The Kaleidoscope Trust.
It provided an open forum for candid conversations on LGBTQI+ rights in participants' home countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Canada, Singapore, Australia, India and Bangladesh.
Sessions explored religious, political and historical perspectives, including the legacy of British legislation imposed during the colonial period.
Speaker-delegates drew from their personal experiences as well as their expertise in human rights law and other disciplines.
The conference produced a summary statement, outlining young people's recommendations for positive change, which was published ahead of the April 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London.
The statement can be downloaded as a pdf from this webpage.
