This three-year, fully funded scholarship offers an outstanding PhD candidate the chance to complete a PhD at Royal Holloway, University of London, in a research area aligned to the charitable objectives of Cumberland Lodge.
In addition to covering Home/EU tuition fees, the Amy Buller PhD Scholar receives an annual tax-free stipend of £12,600, and a contribution of up to £500 annually towards research expenses.
The Scholar is based in their academic department at Royal Holloway's campus in Egham, but also receives mentoring and support from academic staff and associates at Cumberland Lodge in nearby Windsor Great Park.
Our inaugural Scholar, Dr Kitty O'Lone, completed her three-year term in September 2017 and her successor, Amber Pierce, joined us in October 2017 and completed her term in August 2020. Our current Scholar is Joshua Rice, who joined us in September 2020 and will complete in August 2023.
What's involved?
The Amy Buller PhD Scholar plays an active role in the residential life of Cumberland Lodge and benefits from their association with an educational charity with a vision of building more peaceful, open and inclusive societies.
The role involves carrying out 12 residential weekend duties at Cumberland Lodge per year, helping to host our visiting student study retreat groups. This involves helping to facilitate our St Catharine’s Sessions, which are short seminars focused on particular areas of social and ethical interest outside of students' normal fields of academic study.
In addition to this teaching experience, the Amy Buller PhD Scholar has the opportunity to network with public figures and academics from a wide range of disciplines, as one of our Cumberland Lodge Fellows, and is periodically invited to contribute essays, blogs and podcasts, and to give informal talks to our visiting groups.
He or she is expected to act as an ambassador for the Lodge at high-profile conferences and during student retreats, and to support our work with postgraduate students.
The Amy Buller PhD Scholar is free to use the resources and facilities at Cumberland Lodge to further their research, and is expected to attend our annual Fellows' Retreat for Cumberland Lodge Fellows, each September during the Scholarship period.
These opportunities enable the successful candidate to enhance his or her own public engagement and teaching profile, and to contribute to the impact of the charitable foundation itself.
