Md Rafiqul Islam

Rafiqul is an ESRC-funded PhD researcher at the Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich. His doctoral research examines social-ecological trade-offs in Hilsa conservation in Bangladesh, focusing on fisheries governance, conservation policy, fisher livelihoods, compliance, compensation and ecological sustainability. His work combines fisheries science, development studies, social-ecological systems analysis, qualitative fieldwork, systematic review and system dynamics modelling. He holds an MSc in Transformative Change for Sustainable Development from the University of Greenwich, graduating with Distinction, and a BSc in Fisheries from Bangladesh Agricultural University. His broader research interests include small-scale fisheries, conservation-livelihood trade-offs, social-ecological systems, stakeholder engagement, and the design of fisheries governance approaches that are both socially just and ecologically effective.
