Governance and funding

Cumberland Lodge has its location deep in Windsor Great Park.

Cumberland Lodge is an independent registered education charity and social enterprise based in Windsor Great Park. Our mission is to develop the next generation of leaders by fostering dialogue, critical thinking, and greater understanding across difference.

For almost 80 years, we have provided a space where people from diverse backgrounds can come together to explore social challenges, exchange ideas, and develop the skills needed to lead positive change. Since 1947, our programmes have supported generations of young people, educators, policymakers, professionals, and community leaders.

How is Cumberland Lodge governed?

Cumberland Lodge is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. We are overseen by a Board of Trustees, who are responsible for ensuring that we operate in accordance with our charitable objectives, legal obligations, and governing documents.

Trustees provide strategic oversight and are supported by our executive team who are responsible for the charity’s day-to-day management and operations.

Our annual reports and financial statements are prepared in accordance with charity law and are publicly available.

How is Cumberland Lodge funded?

Cumberland Lodge operates a social enterprise model.

Alongside our charitable activities, we make our historic buildings and facilities available for conferences, meetings, retreats, events, and celebrations.

We also receive support through event ticket sales, donations, grants, partnerships, and our Friends of Cumberland Lodge membership scheme. Our Friends contribute to the long-term sustainability of our work and help us expand opportunities for future generations.

The income we generate enables us to invest in our charitable mission including educational programmes and events and providing leadership development opportunities for young people, as well as the stewardship and maintenance of a Grade II-listed building.

As a charity, any surplus generated through our activities is reinvested in our charitable mission.

Why Cumberland Lodge?

Cumberland Lodge plays an important role in our educational mission.

Our residential environment allows participants to step away from their everyday lives and engage in meaningful conversations, often over several days. This way, participants are able to build deeper understanding and develop lasting connections.

Royal patronage

The education charity at Cumberland Lodge was founded under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1947, with use of the building for this purpose granted by King George VI. Since then, the charity has had two further royal patrons: Queen Elizabeth II, and today His Majesty The King.

Royal patronage is an honorary role that reflects support for our charitable mission and educational work. No members of the Royal Family live at the Lodge or are involved in its day-to-day operations.

Cumberland Lodge exists to deliver public benefit through education, dialogue, and leadership development. Everything we do, from our educational programmes to our venue hire activities and our public events, is designed to support that purpose.
