Her Majesty The Queen (1926 – 2022)

A statement from Cumberland Lodge on the news of the death of our Patron, Her Majesty the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II

Her Majesty The Queen (1926 – 2022)

Patron of Cumberland Lodge (2003 – 2022)

Today, we received news of the passing of our Patron, Her Majesty the Queen.

Our Chief Executive, Canon Dr Edmund Newell, said: ‘All of us at Cumberland Lodge extend our sincerest condolences on the news of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with all members of the Royal Family and Household.

‘Her Majesty took a keen interest in all our work, interacted regularly with those attending our events, and visited us many times. We are deeply indebted to her, for her unstinting support, wisdom and guidance as our Patron, over so many years, and we stand with the nation and fellow citizens across the Commonwealth, in sorrow, as we honour her life of great service.’

Her Majesty became Patron of Cumberland Lodge from 2003, following the passing of our founding Patron, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

The Queen’s most recent private visit to Cumberland Lodge was in February 2020, to meet some of our Cumberland Lodge Fellows and hear their ideas for new interdisciplinary discussion sessions for students visiting us on university study retreats.

Her Majesty’s parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, were instrumental in the establishment of the educational foundation here in 1947. The Queen’s late sister, Princess Margaret, was our Visitor from 1984 until her death in 2002.
