We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Payroll Officer and Bookkeeper to join our finance team for a minimum of six months. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting the Finance Manager in the efficient running of the finance department. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting and payroll, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Job description
The Payroll Officer and Bookkeeper will be responsible for managing the payroll processes, posting period-end journals, and ensuring compliance with UK financial regulations.
Reporting to: Finance Manager
Functional relationships with: Accounts Assistants, Chief Operating Officer, Cumberland Lodge staff
Key responsibilities:
Payroll management
- Supervision of outsourced payroll. This involves collating casual hours, overtime, starters, leavers, changes in employee details etc and checking the draft payroll.
- Calculation of holiday pay for casual workers.
- Pension administration.
- Ensure compliance with changes to relevant payroll laws and regulations.
- Timely submission of PSA and P11D.
- Serve as the first port of call for all payroll-related queries from employees.
- Any other payroll related tasks as and when they occur.
- Manage timesheet schedules and calculate annualised hours, ensuring accurate and efficient tracking of employee work hours.
General ledger maintenance
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial data.
- Monthly periodic journals including accruals and prepayments.
- Assisting in the production of monthly trial balance, with supporting schedules and reconciliations (some of these are prepared by the Accounts Assistant), including explanatory notes.
- Collaborate with the Finance Manager to support all aspects of the finance department’s operations.
- Audit Support – Assist with internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
- Other tasks as may be reasonably required to facilitate Cumberland Lodge’s work.
Person specification
You’ll have:
- proven experience in payroll processing and general ledger accounting
- a strong understanding of UK financial regulations and tax laws
- proficiency in accounting software and payroll systems
- excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- strong organisational and time management abilities
- effective communication and interpersonal skills
- the ability to work independently and as part of a team
Contract: Six months
Salary: £32,000 per annum FTE
Hours: 20-22.5 hours per week
Shifts: Office based, flexible working hours
The successful candidate must have access to a vehicle, as Cumberland Lodge is located in the middle of Windsor Great Park without easy access by public transport.
Benefits
Annual leave: 33 days including Bank Holidays which will be pro-rata. The Charity is closed over the Christmas period which will be deducted from the leave allocation.
