Commonwealth Futures: Youth Perspectives

Join us for this residential conference for young people from across the Commonwealth, at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park, near London, from 1-3 December 2019.

Over the course of three days, in beautiful and inspiring surroundings, you will have the chance to contribute thoughts and ideas on policy documents prepared by a youth-led taskforce for the 12th Commonwealth Youth Forum that runs alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Rwanda in 2020.

We will be focusing on two of the key themes on the Commonwealth Youth Forum agenda - ICT and Innovations, and The Rule of Law – and their roles and potential for promoting social cohesion around the world.

Special guests attending, alongside representatives from a raft of Commonwealth institutions, include:

  • Her Excellency Yamina Karitanyi, UK High Commissioner for the Republic of Rwanda
  • Dr Arjoon Suddhoo, Deputy Secretary-General, Commonwealth Secretariat
  • Christine Ohuruogu MBE, retired Olympic athlete / Law graduate, Queen Mary University of London

This Cumberland Lodge youth symposium is convened in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat, Associations of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the British Council.

It is the first event in the Commonwealth Futures programme, run by the ACU and the British Council - a series of youth workshops taking place in India, South Africa and the UK. Each workshop focuses on the role of student leaders in creating cohesive societies, and addresses the question of, 'What future do young people want for our Commonwealth?'

Outcomes from the Cumberland Lodge symposium will directly contribute to both the 2020 Commonwealth Youth Forum, and the British Council’s London ‘Going Global 2020’ conference in June 2020.

The symposium begins on the evening of Sunday 1 December, and concludes on the afternoon of Tuesday 3 December.

On day one, we set the scene for the ensuing discussions and introduce the youth-led taskforce policy documents.

On day two, you will have the chance to generate ideas and share your reflections on the documents, and on our final day, you will have the opportunity to present these to a panel of high-profile guests.

Accommodation and meals will be provided throughout the event, and travel arrangements will also be covered.
